A Letter to Dear U of I Students Welcome back Students, to the final semester of this school year. My name is Glenn Heminover, Jr. I am a Neuromuscular Therapist here in Champaign, with more than 21 years of Professional Experience in practicing Professional Massage Therapy, Body Therapy, Neuromuscular Massage Therapy, Movement reeducation, and health care products. From the research from the Touch Therapy Institute in Florida, having a massage often will keep your stress and pain under control. Massage is an excellent gift for your friends. Getting a massage regular may increase the possibility of getting excellent grades, and the more you can keep your stress level down, you can easily gain the knowledge you want without much effort. Invest in yourself using Massage Therapy by keeping your stress level down for the rest of this school year. You owe it to yourself. Massage Therapy can help. Eighteen million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Scientists at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine claim massage could be the prescription to lessen the pain. Alex Martinez-Tornek, migraine sufferer: "The sensation of the pain is like something boring into your eye." Alex Martinez-Tornek has migraine headaches two or three days a week. She's a graduate student who spends a lot of time hitting the books. But lately she's been hitting the massage table. Alex Martinez-Tornek: "When I started getting massages, I noticed that it wasn't as frequent. When the migraines did come, they weren't as powerful. They weren't as painful." Alex is part of a study at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. The results show massage therapy is an effective treatment for migraines. Maria Hernandez-Reif, Ph.D., senior research associate, Touch Research Institute, University of Miami, Miami, FL: "What we're finding is that immediately after the first massage, the individuals are reporting less pain, less anxiety." The study monitored 26 patients. Half got a special cranial massage treatment twice a week for five weeks. The group getting the massage cut their medication in half, had one third as many sleep disturbances and had significantly less pain. Maria Hernandez-Reif, Ph.D.: "Probably the most important finding is that the individuals are telling us they're having more headache-free days." And less stress. Maria Hernandez-Reif, Ph.D.: "We're finding a reduction of the stress hormones for the migraine sufferers receiving massage." For Alex, getting a regular massage dulls her pain by 75 percent. Researchers say in some cases massage may remove the need for medication. But it is not a cure for the chronic pain that sometimes incapacitates people. Migraine sufferers continue to lose more than 157 million workdays a year. Get your Health
